THERAPY SESSIONS NOW AVAILABLE!
Ruth Murray
BA Hons, PG Dip, Cert MRCSLT, HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist
Where will you see my child?
Initial assessments can take place in your home or at your child's educational setting - whichever is more convenient for you.
Therapy sessions are usually more effective when they take place in the setting where the child spends most of their time, but we can decide together what will work best for your child.
What if my child is also seeing an NHS Speech and Language Therapist?
That's absolutely fine. I will contact your NHS therapist and make sure we are working collaboratively to provide the best support for your child.
Do you work with any areas other than speech?
Currently I only work with speech difficulties.
I do have extensive experience in working with children with language and social communication difficulties, and if I feel your child has any needs in those areas I will bring it up with you and offer advice on alternative options for support, where I can.
Does my child need to practice between therapy sessions?
Definitely! With speech work, little and often is best, so fastest progress is made when you do short practice sessions at least once a day.
When can you see my child?
I offer face-to-face sessions during school term-time only.
If your child is receiving therapy from me, I offer telephone consultation sessions during the summer holidays, to ensure your child is able to continue to make progress during this longer break.
How long will my child need therapy for?
It really depends on what we need to work on, and how quickly progress is made. I will always let you know as soon as I think my input is no longer needed, but you can bring therapy to a close at any point.
How often will my child need therapy?
This depends on your child's needs. Weekly therapy is common, certainly to begin with, but we can tailor therapy frequency to your family's needs.
Who should attend the therapy sessions with my child?
Ideally, the adults who will be helping your child to practice. This would usually be you and a member of staff from the educational setting. This way, everyone knows how to help your child, and is doing it in the same way.
Do you work with adults as well as children?
Yes. I work with adults who would like to target any speech sound difficulties that are ongoing from childhood (think 'lisps' and trouble pronouncing 'r').
I'm afraid I don't work with adults with acquired speech disorders - e.g. problems resulting from brain injury / stroke/ degenerative conditions.
